Chapter 13
Vegas Robbies
May 2001
May is a wonderful time of the year for being a rep in Arizona and Nevada. My travel is cut by almost two-thirds, the high schools have let out, and I do not have any more presentations until August. I get to play a lot more golf with my old men. If I am in Arizona, I am typically home every night because I try to do all my in-home presentations early in the afternoon.
One of the only things I really need to concentrate on right now is getting my fifty-plus students ready for the July start. It is imperative that I have a show rate of 85 to 90 percent. During this time of year I spend most of my day talking to students and their parents, making sure their financial aid and housing is secured. To help with my show rate, I always hold an annual mixer for all of my students the week before Memorial Day. They are all required to come. I always hold the mixer in Mesa, at a local park, where I introduce everyone to each other, make sure everyone has a ride to school, have lunch plans, answer questions about the students' and families' upcoming adventures to the Laramie Institute of Technology, and then make teams for a volleyball tournament to build camaraderie.
Before this year's mixer, I am once again heading across the lonely desert of lost souls, crossing through the Joshua Tree Forest on my way to Las Vegas for a week to conduct some in-homes, check on both of my marks, and then meet up with two of my friends from Minnesota, the Robbies. Both are professional alcoholics, and both of them think they are the best card players from the state of Minnesota. They both have a tendency to think that every woman who looks their way wants to be with them. It has been many, many years since I last partied with the Robbies. It will also be a first for me to see them away from Minnesota. I can only imagine what they will be like in Sin City with all the gambling, drinking, and sex they can muster up.
They are definitely characters. Besides the fact that they have the same first name, both of their last names start with an S. Since I cannot call them either Rob or Robbie without the both of them turning around, I call them Showman and Skelly; the only difference between the two is that Showman is a five-foot-four Italian Mexican mutt mix, with a full, dark head of auburn hair and a really severe shortman complex. He has a tendency to drink too much and start something he cannot finish. The other Robbie, or Skelly, is a five-foot-ten man with a slightly receding, dirty blonde hairline. He's a very smart man and has plenty of untapped potential. It is a shame that he ended up marrying the girl they both dated in high school because she got pregnant.
